We set up camp on the Canning stock route in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia. Just before sunset I walked to a nearby waterhole. I was enjoying the tranquility when suddenly a spectacular whirring cloud of lime green soared overhead.
It took me a minute to focus on what I was seeing. It was a huge flock of Budgerigars, one of our Australian parrots and it was utter chaos as each "Budgie" dropped from the sky for a drink and then quickly returned to the green cloud. In no time at all they were gone. The image of that flock of Australia's smallest parrot, "Budgies" as we like to call them, will stay with me forever.
